Mr. Rogers (IRB2022-364)

Who: Monolingual English speakers or English speakers who learned one of the following languages in an immersion setting within the last three months: Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Mandarin, or Japanese.

What: Complete a language background questionnaire, a proficiency exam (unless you only speak English), and to read/listen to English words while we monitor your brainwaves.

Compensation: Either course credit or up to $42 in Cougar Cash for your time, as well a certificate of proficiency based on your exam.

English Intonation (IRB E2020-159)

Who: Native speakers of American English

What: You will listen to some recordings of people talking, including some that have been modified so that they’re difficult to understand, and make judgments about the speakers, like where they’re from or if you think they sound friendly. It should last 15–20 minutes. Headphones are recommended.

Compensation: Course credit where applicable.

Mie (IRB2024-135)

Who: Native Chinese speakers or learners who have completed at least CHIN 202 or equivalent, are at least 18 years old, and are also proficient in English.

What: Complete a language background questionnaire, and then listen to Chinese sentences while we monitor your brain waves.

Compensation: Course credit or up to $25 in Cougar Cash (if you don't have a BYU ID, you can receive an Amazon gift card).

Everyday Communication in Autism

Who: Autistic and non-autistic adults 18-35 years of age

What: You will record natural spoken interactions in different situations (e.g., with family, friends, at school, at work) over a few days or only a few hours, share written texts you have already created (e.g., messages, emails, class assignments), and complete a few surveys. Participation is voluntary and may be withdrawn at any time.

Compensation: Participants will receive financial compensation for their time. Participants who volunteer for 7 days for about 3 hours per day will receive $155. Fewer days participating will result in proportional compensation.

Command-C (IRB2022-429)

Who: Individuals whose first (or only) language is English.

What: You will listen to sentences and look at pictures while we record where you look on the screen. The study will last up to 1 hour.

Sluchay (IRB2024-229)

Who: Native or non-native Russian speakers (age 18+, also proficient in English)

What: Complete a proficiency test and then read sentences in Russian while we record your brainwaves. The study will last up to 2 hours total.

Compensation: $40 in Cougar Cash (if you don't have a BYU ID, you will receive an Amazon gift card).
