Who: individuals whose first (or only) language is English.
What: You will be asked to listen to sentences and look at pictures while we record where you look on the screen.
Compensation: You will receive either course credit or $15 in Cougar Cash for your time (or an Amazon gift card if you don’t have a BYU ID).

Mr. Rogers (IRB2022-364)
Who: Monolingual English speakers or English speakers who recently learned Spanish or Russian in an immersion setting.
What: You will be asked to complete a language background questionnaire, a proficiency exam (unless you only speak English), and then to read/listen to English words while we monitor your brainwaves.
Compensation: You will receive either course credit or up to $42 in Cougar Cash for your time, as well a certificate of proficiency based on your exam.

English Intonation (IRB E2020-159)
Who: Native speakers of American English
What: You will listen to some recordings of people talking, including some that have been modified so that they’re difficult to understand, and make judgments about the speakers, like where they’re from or if you think they sound friendly. It should last 15–20 minutes. Headphones are recommended.

Second-Language Acquisition and Memory (IRB2022-442)
Who: Right-handed native English speakers with NO knowledge of Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, or any other romance language.
What: As a participant, you will be asked to learn vocabulary in a foreign language while we monitor your brain activity. The experiment will take place in two sessions, the first lasting around 2 hours.
Compensation: $12 an hour in the form of an Amazon gift card.

Who: Individuals whose first (or only) language is English and has normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
What: You will read sentences and answer questions about them. You will then complete a survey. The reading task will last up to 1 hour, and the survey task will last up to 30 minutes.
Compensation: Participants will receive course credit and/or be entered in a drawing for 1 of 20 $50 Amazon e-gift cards.
